Biomechanica: Building Bone from Starlight

Biomechanica lab with Lumen welcoming the player

Every bone in your body began as starlight. Hydrogen from the Big Bang, calcium forged in stars that exploded long ago — you are, quite literally, made of stardust. Biomechanica: Exploring the Mechanisms of Life invites you to rebuild that story with your own hands. Episode 1, Bone, is now live at studio-shangri-la.com/games.

From a single atom to a living femur

You start with individual atoms in a quiet reaction chamber. Combine them into molecules, grow those molecules into mineral crystals, weave protein into collagen, and finally assemble bone — the same climb from chemistry to biology that your own body completes every day. Each step is a small, satisfying act of synthesis, triggered by a pulse of light: a photon zap that binds what you’ve built.

In the lab: Lumen welcomes you, and your first build begins with a single water molecule.

Guided by Lumen

Your companion is Lumen, a light-being who has watched atoms dance since the universe’s first dawn. Lumen explains each stage with warmth and clarity, and when you’re stuck, floating photon orbs offer hints — packets of light, the same energy that powers the reactions themselves.

Discoveries along the way

Not every path leads straight to bone, and that’s the point for learning and understanding. Build without carbon and you’ll meet Cumulus, a drifting cloud of unbound gas. Let the mineral balance tip too far and you’ll find Trabecula, a lattice in motion. Enjoy the elegant lessons on life’s variations of chemistry.

Trabecula: when mineral runs high, the lattice finds motion.

More alike than different

Along the way, Biomechanica draws parallels on different levels of life: bone and a circuit board share more than you’d expect — layered structures of mineral and organic material, organized to carry load and signal. Finish the episode and you can print your own blueprint schematic of the bone you built.

Our ethos: advanced, approachable, fun

At Studio Shangri-La, we believe advanced science can be fun and welcoming. Biomechanica uses real concepts — atomic bonding, crystal lattices, collagen, mineral balance — and makes them tangible through play, curiosity, and a little cosmic wonder. The goal is simple: leave every player understanding a little more of the machinery of life, and enjoying the discovery.
