An extension of some conceptual photography pieces lately, such as “Wild Cosmos” and “Kudzu On Mars,” these new mixed media works in progress really bring to life the celestial concept for exhibit.
Accretion Disk is made from a great deal of surplus basket weave, that otherwise would have been thrown out. Its spiraling nature immediately brought to mind a space theme, either a galaxy or back hole, or stars. I went with Accretion DIsk as a combination of those, humorously drawing in even its own materials for growth. It’s been great fun brining this to life and now continuing to refine it for presentation. That’s an interesting balanace, given both the chaos and order of the subject.
The companion mixed media in its orbit is “Machinations” based on a drawing of gears, it’s veiled behind some amazing gold threaded paper – sourced from a local art supply. That’s one is also still coming together, but it’s going to be illuminated with back lighting.
There’s a lot of room for this slice of cosmos to explore different media and for the pieces to interact with each other in an entertaining way. More piece to come will most likely include a more traditional basket. It’s absolutely supposed to be humorous, and blur the line between concept and craft, and adornment and exhibit.
